Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a relatively unique glycoprotein derived largely from fetal liver and partially from the yolk sac until it degenerates at about 12 weeks of gestation. Women with abnormal unexplained elevation of MSAFP levels in the second trimester are at increased risk for fetal loss, low birth weight, preterm delivery, pre-eclampsia oligohydramnois, and several other obstetric complications as miscarriage, intrauterine growth retardation, and placental abruption fetal death before 28 week and perinatal death. Unexplained high levels of MSAFP have been associated with both ultrasongraphic placental abnormalities (e.g., placental sonolucencies, periplacental hemorrhage, increased placental thickness) and vascular and inflammatory placental lesions observed at delivery.
