Abstract

Terminalia L. is the second-largest genus of family Combretaceae. Numerous Terminalia species were confirmed to possess antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The current study targeted to estimate the antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials of the n-hexane and hydro-methanolic extracts of the leaves of two Terminalia species viz., T. laxiflora and T. myriocarpa. In addition, the metabolic compositions of these extracts were explored to find out the constituents, which might be responsible for these activities. The percentage of antioxidant activity (AA%) was determined by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Whereas, the antimicrobial effect of each sample was evaluated in-vitro by the agar well diffusion method against five microbial strains, namely Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the tested samples were determined by the broth macrodilution method. The components of the bioactive samples were identified through GC-MS and UPLC-ESI-MS analyses. Results indicated that all the tested samples possess antioxidant and antimicrobial abilities. Twenty-five and twenty-three versus twenty-nine and twenty-six components were detected in Terminalia laxiflora and Terminalia myriocarpa leaves, respectively. Actually, some of these constituents were reported to exhibit antioxidant and/or antimicrobial properties, which might account for the effects produced by the parent extracts.
