The current essay extracted from my Master theis, aims to examine several well-known arguments in ''Fontamara'' by Ignazio Silone, both from a stylistic and a linguistic point of view. On a stylistic level, Silone widely uses an ironic style and frequently resorts to the use of numerous rhetorical figures such as antithesis, simile, anacolute, antonomasia, metaphor, hyperbole, emphasis, barchiology and many others. On a linguistic level, prevails a paratactic construction of the period with a rather simple and colloquial language that reflects the ignorance in which the poor farmers of Fontamara live, while the more educated and powerful citizens express themselves in a more refined forms and also enriched by Latin quotes and words. In this essay I have kept to the bare minimum, on Silone and his era to shed more light on his motivations and formation as a writer. For this reason I has, regretfully, resigned myself for referring to the rich bibliography for further information on Silone that can be found at the end of this study. The criteria I followed is mainly inspired by an owen desire for simplicity in the presentation of the Abruzzese writer with the aim of understanding, in an authentic way, his thoughts, motivations, in particular his style, and the manner of narration adopted in the composition of Fontarma.
