نال التشبيه عناية كبيرة من النقاد؛ حيث سبروا أغواره وأدركوا متى يتفاوت فيه الشعراء، وميَّزُوا بين الجيّد منه والرديء، وبين الحسن والأحسن، وورد في كُتُبهم عبارات وأوصاف تشير إلى تفاوت درجات إعجابهم بالتشبيهات أو عدمها، ولعل أبرز ما ورد في كتبهم وصفهم لبعض التشبيهات بمصطلح (التشبيه العـــقيـــم). والتشبيه العقيم ليس نوعًا من أنواع التشبيهات وَفْق تصنيفات البلاغيين للتشبيه حسب أركانه سواء طرفيه، أو وجه الشبه، أو الأداة، ولكنها نماذج من التشبيهات توقَّفَ عندها النقاد القُدَامَى، وأعجبوا بها، ووجدوا فيها خصائص وسمات انفردت بها؛ مما جعلهم ينعتوها بهذا الاسم؛ تمييزًا لها عن غيرها من التشبيهات. وقد وقف ابن رشيق على عدد من هذه التشبيهات وأطلق عليها مصطلح التشبيه العقيم، وأورد تعريفًا له، لكن عندما ذكر نماذج هذا التشبيه اكتفى بذكر النماذج، ولم يقف على بيان سبب تميزها؛ فلم يوضح لنا العُقْم أو الجمال والابتكار في هذه التشبيهات، وإنما اكتفـى بهذه الإشارة المُبْهَمَة في التعريف الصَّرِيح، ولم يقف مع النماذج مُعَلِلًا ومُوَجِهًا سبب وصفها بهذا الوصف.  لذا؛ وقع الاختيار على هذه النماذج المذكورة عند ابن رشيق للوقوف عليها بالعرض والنقد والتحليل والتوجيه؛ فجاء عنوان البحث: (التَّشْبِيهَات الشِّعْرِيَّة العُقْم عِنْدَ ابْنِ رَشِيق دِرَاسَــةٌ نَــقْــدِيَّــة) Similes have received great attention from critics; as they have explored their depths and realized when poets differ in them, and distinguished between the good and the bad, and between the good and the best, and their books contain phrases and descriptions that indicate the varying degrees of their admiration for similes or not, and perhaps the most prominent thing mentioned in their books is their description of some similes with the term (barren simile). The sterile simile is not a type of simile according to the classifications of rhetoricians of simile according to its pillars, whether its two sides, the point of similarity, or the tool, but they are examples of similes that ancient critics stopped at, admired, and found in them characteristics and features that distinguished them; which made them call them by this name; to distinguish them from other similes. Ibn Rasheeq stopped at a number of these similes and called them the term sterile simile, and provided a definition for it, but when he mentioned examples of this simile, he was satisfied with mentioning the examples, and did not stop at stating the reason for their distinction; he did not explain to us the sterility or beauty and innovation in these similes, but rather he was satisfied with this vague indication in the explicit definition, and did not stop with the examples, explaining and directing the reason for describing them with this description. Therefore, these examples mentioned by Ibn Rasheeq were chosen to stand on them by presentation, criticism, analysis and direction; The title of the research came: (Poetic similes of sterility in Ibn Rasheeq, a critical study)
