The Holy Quran has an inexhaustible linguistic richness, which offers great opportunities for Moslem and orientalist translators in research and analysis. The Quranic text is the highest authority in Arabic rhetorics, including, but not limited to, stylistics, semantics, and phonological features. This paper investigates one of the rhetorical features in the Quran, which is recurred 1260 times throughout the Holy Quran, namely, the Rhetorical Question, which is a special kind of fictional questioning that has argumentative aims such as persuasion, irony, and indignation. This paper compares two contemporary translations of the meanings of the Quran into French, one is Moslem and the other is orientalist. In an attempt to better understand the argumentative function of the rhetorical question, the study introduces a new proposal elaborated due to the introduction of some clues inherent to this figure of speech in the French language. These clues vary according to the enunciative situation and the function of the question; they can be, for example: argumentative morphemes, adverbs of manner, or impersonal turns, among others. The paper finds that the two translators have, in most cases, opted for a literal translation without undertaking any linguistic maneuver aimed at better illustrating the argumentative function of the rhetorical question.
