Abstract

The aim of the study is to focus on the theme of matriarchy in the novel Like water for chocolate by Laura Esquivel and Al Watad by Khairi Shalabi through a comparative socio-literary analysis that highlights the power of the mother in two different societies: the Mexican and the Egyptian. The two writers share several elements that focus on the supermacy of the woman - mother from domestic and social perspectives. However, both writers differ when in tackling certain social issues due to  the variety of customs and traditions, which affects the description of the two mothers' characters within each work. The study is an attempt to present two different models of matriarchy in two societies of different languages and cultures from the socio-literary approach and the comparative method.
