Abstract

This article integrates the methods of sociolinguistics, cultural linguistics and media linguistics and follows the contrastive analytical approach according to the theory of linguistic inequality resulting from social inequality to compare social inequality in Egypt and Germany. This is done in a multimodal context through the analysis of two films, one German and the other Arabic, in an attempt to bridge the gap between the different societal groups for better human coexistence. First, the term social inequality is defined then the combination of methods is shown. The terms cultural linguistics, sociolects, multimodal and linguistic film analysis are introduced. Finally, the two films that explicitly deal with social inequality are analyzed. The article has shown that social inequality is man-made and therefore human-changeable. It was clear initially in the two films that participants accepted the fact that social inequality is unchangeable. Nevertheless, the analysis carried out raises the hope that with a more precise insight into the origin of social inequality, this fact can be shaken. Despite both parties' mutual dislike for each other's lives in the two films, one party became more tolerant and acceptable of the other showing compassion and even falling in love with the other party.
