Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) and cutaneous adverse food reaction (CAFR) are fairly common encounter in canine practice. Nevertheless, investigations of new treatment options have been limited. This study carried out for assessing the efficacy of Autohemotherapy, or autologous whole blood (ABT), as a treatment for CAD and CAFR. This is a randomized,
double-blind, controlled Study over a period of 25 days, designed for evaluation the efficacy of ABT in 45 adult dogs suffering from atopic dermatitis and / or cutaneous adverse food reaction. Dogs' inclusion criteria were a seasonal itching, which had been present for at least one year. Animals showed good responses to intramuscular injection of ABT, tolerated the treatment, and there were no adverse effects. Therefore, ABT may be an alternative treatment option for patients with CAD and CAFR. Future investigation into the mechanism with controlled clinical studies using a large number of patients will be necessary to provide supporting evidence for this potential treatment. The success rate seems to be a promising option for the future treatment of allergic skin conditions in dogs.
