A case study of an archaeological icon from the eighth century in the Monastery of Anba Basantaous

Abstract

The research presents the components used to make an 
archaeological icon representing Saint Bicenti, carried out using 
oil colors (not previously published). Cross section to identify the 
anatomical structure of the icon, and the type of wood and type 
of fibers used in the cloth imaging holder was identified through 
digital microscopy examination and comparison of samples with 
standard samples. The type of binder used in the imaging ground 
and the chromatic medium used in the color layer were identified 
through the use of FTIR spectroscopy, in addition to the 
biological study.
