Abstract

Eighty samples of plain ice cream and fruit ice cream (40,each) were obtained from supermarkets in Tripoli, Libya for quantitative (direct) and qualitative (indirect) detection of Aeromonas in the product. The media used were Tryptone – Soy Both plus Ampicillin (30mg/l), CIN and Aeromonas starch DNA agar. Incubation was at 30*C for 24h. The results obtained showed that the qualitative detection 10% is more productive than quantitative recovery 7.5%of bacterium. The accuracy of the first (indirect) toward Aeromanas count, about 102 cells / g greater than the recovery by the second. There is no wide variation between CIN and Aeromonas starch DNA agar for detection of the microorganisms. Six out of eighty (7.5%) samples were contaminated with A. hydrophila, while A. caviae was found in two samples (2.5%) of ice cream.
