Abstract

The Swahili poetry depicted the extent of prosperity and civilization experienced by the people of the east African coast before the advent of the Portuguese. Then it embodied the severity of the destruction and devastation carried out by the Portuguese in the city of Pate, after they reached the east African coast. Swahili poetry also depicted the joy of the Swahili people and their celebration of the arrival of the sultans of Oman to the east African coast, liberating them from the Portuguese presence, and spreading peace there.
