Abstract

Field experiment waS carried out in sandy loam soil at EI-Tahrir province to
evaluate the potentiality of utiliz.ation the municipal sewage sluOge (applied at rates
zero, 10 and 20 tonlfed.) with and without bacterial inoculation (Bacillus polymyxa) as
a bio-organic fertilizer for com plants under three levels of mineral N- fertilizer (zero,
60 and 120 Kg NI fad.). Also. the effects of bio-organic materials as soil conditioner
were considered. The results showed significant increases in lIegetalilie growth of com plants
due to three kinds of fertilizers. MoreOller, either nitrogen fertilizer or bacterial
inoculation had no effects on heavy metals content in com plants. On the other hand,
com plants accumulated Significant concentrations from l"lIavy metals w'lth increasing
the sludge levels from zero to 10 and 20 ton I fed. Concerning the corn yield, the
application or sewage sludge at levels 10 and 20 ton I fed'increased the grain yield of
corn by 37.3 and 56.3%. respectively over control. The addition of 60 and 120 Kg N I
fed
led to increase the grain yield by 60.S and 101.7%, respectively over control.
Moreover, the highest grain yield of com was obtained in case of a.ppiication of 2Q ton
sludge and 120 kg N I fed. Dala also Indicated thai sewage sludge enhanced the
some chemical and biological properties of soil namely organic matter, total-N,
dehydrogenase activity and lotal count of bacteria. Also, addition of sewage sludge
led to increase the DTPA extractable Cd. Pb and Ni in soil after corn harvesting.
