Abstract

Several slorage experimenls were performed at Mansoura Experimental Farm. Agric. Res. Institute. To study the storability 01 different potato evs as affected by new
different stoling techniques. al the ambient temperature lor six months period during
2001 and 2002 yea". Results could be summarized as follows:- Exp.l, II, and III: All used essential oils were effectively act as a sprout-suppressants at low
concentration, they were mote effective as two or three oils were mixed together.
They could be directly applied (sprayed in Uquld phase). or IndlredJy (volatilized
to be act in vapour phase) within closed headspace. They highly suppressed the incidence 01 aproullng, welghtloaing end damage.
they also maintained higher TSS values. The most effective entJ·sprout treatment for each cv was:- Oilta ev: Their tubers Mre sprayed twice with thyme + caraway oila (1 + 1
mill) within closed headspece,             ii.     Dilta cv: Their luber were exposure to (thyme + caraway) (5 + 5 ml) and/or
(10 + 10 ml) oils to be act in vapour phase within closed headspace (60 x 101
em~. Spunta cv: Their tubers were sprayed with (diU + thyme + eucaJyptua) oils (1
+ 1 + 1 mill..) or (dill + thyme) oils (1 + 1 mill) twice at opened heads pace.            Iv.   Polesta ev: Their tubers were apreyed twice with limonene 011 (5 mill..) under
nee straw cover at opened aites (sprouting [%J was reduced from 97.5% up
to 19.8%)_ Oiamont cv: Their lubers were sprayed twice with thyme oil (5 mill) under
the same conditJons, (sprouting % was reduced from 50% up to 2_3%. also
euca.lyptua oil up to 4.6%).            vi.    Provenlo ev: Their tubera were also sprayed twice with caraway or
eucalyptus and/or limonene oils (5 1"'!1Il) under the same conditions,
(sprouting % was reduced 'rom 24.1 % up 10 0.0%, full suppression). Finally, such treatments could be concluded as a new technique 01 great
benefits for storing potatoea al the ambient tempereture for six months period (without
any cold or synlhetJc anti-spl'Ouling application).
