Arthrodiastasis is a regime of articulated distraction used to treat complex joint disorders by use of an external fixation device to provide off-loading of muscle and body forces, and distraction of the joint space. Arthrodiastasis is useful in the treatment of Perthes disease, avascular necrosis, epiphysiolysis, complication of congenital dysplasia, tuberculosis, and idiopathic chondrolysis. Arthrodiastasis does not alter the anatomy of the femur or pelvis; is a smaller surgical procedure; improves the sphericity of the collapsed femoral head; improves the mobility of the stiff hip; and does not require invasive surgery.
