Abstract

Breast milk has been hypothesized to be a source of bacteria for the infant gut. This study aimed at searching for probiotic bacteria in breast milk and infant feces and whether their levels in stools of babies vary with different modalities of breast feeding. The majority of probiotic strains, isolated from milk and infants' stools, were identical, suggesting the breast milk as their probable source. There was a positive correlation between exclusive breast milk feeding and the number of probiotics in the infants' stools which had a positive reflection on the infant's growth and GIT condition.
