Abstract

Objective: Evaluation of growth in polytransfused thalassemic patients. With short stature and effect of L-carnitine therapy. Method: The study included 30 -thalassemic patients with mean age 13.81.7 and another 30 children with constitutional short stature as a control. Anthropometric measures, thyroid profile, IGF-1 and growth hormone provocation by 2 tests were done at first then follow up of all patient for 6 months without treatment then 8 patient with growth hormone deficiency were given L-carnitine for 6 months then followed up by anthropometric measures, IGF-1 and growth hormone.Results: Of the study showed significant increase of maximum GH secretion IGF-1 SDS Hb level height SDS, growth velocity (cm) and (SDS). Sitting height, estimated mature height and target height-height SDS and cm after treatment. And significant decrease in the number of blood transfusions per month. Conclusion: L-carnitine has a positive effect on the growth of thalassemic patients. A point which call for further studies.
