Abstract

Objectives: to determine the prevalence of infections, to describe their site, complications & to analyze their risk factors in adults with SLE.Subjects and Methods: This study involved two hundred and fifty consecutive SLE patients attending the Rheumatology & Rehabilitation Department in Cairo University Hospitals during the period from September 2010 to March 2011. Patients were classified into infection group and non-infection group, their medical files were retrospectively reviewed for: demographic information, clinical features of the disease, immune profile, laboratory features, disease activity (SLEDAI), medical treatment and infection.Results: The incidence of infection in our SLE patients was high (47.6%), with the commonest infection was bacterial followed by fungal then viral infection and the commonest sites of infection were skin, urinary tract, chest, blood, vagina, oral and septic knee, the main predictors of infection in lupus patients were mucocutenaeus manifestations, pulmonary manifestations, neuropsychiatric manifestations, Raynaud's phenomena, vasculitis, disease activity SLEDAI score, CRP, pulse corticosteroids, pulse cyclophosphamide and mean oral prednisolone dose/day used by the patientsConclusion: SLE patients are at high risk of infections owing to the underlying immunological disease as well as use of immunosuppressive drugs.
