The current study included 20 papillary thyroid carcinoma cases, 10 follicular carcinoma cases and 10 follicular adenoma cases retrieved as routinely processed paraffin blocks taken from the department of Pathology, Kasr El Einy Hospital, Cairo University and from private laboratories. For all specimens, some clinical data were available on the computer files including age and sex of the patients and the staging of the thyroidectomy specimens. The study included 33 thyroidectomy specimens (16 papillary carcinomas, 7 follicular carcinomas, and 10 follicular adenomas), 4 lymph nodes showing metastatic papillary carcinoma and 3 core biopsies from metastatic follicular carcinoma in bone. Four sections were prepared from each paraffin block to be studied both histologically (by Hematoxylin and Eosin stain) and immunohistochemically for CK19 expression by using [Monoclonal Mouse Anti-Human Cytokeratin 19 (Ventana, 760-4281)], HBME-1 expression by using [Monoclonal Mouse Anti-Human HBME-1 antibody (Cell Mark)], and for Galectin 3 expression by using Monoclonal Mouse Anti-Human Galectin-3 (Ventana, 760-4256)]. Immunostaining was done by using BenchMark IHC/ISH staining module (Ventana).
