Abstract

The effects on sexual behavior in patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with IFN alpha plus ribavirin. Aim: of our study was to assess ED, depression and serum testosterone level in male patients with chronic hepatitis C and to study the changes induced by combined therapy with pegylated interferon-alfa and ribavirin.METHOD:We enrolled 50 male patients affected by chronic hepatitis C 30 patient(G1) were treated with pegylated IFN and 20patient(G2) were prescribed silymarin (control group). We assessed IFN influence by using the responses to International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) ,depressive symptoms assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory questionnaire, free and total testosterone .RESULTS:in(G1) The baseline values of each IIEF, depression, free , total testosterone score were compared to those obtained at the end of months 1, 3 months of treatment. At the end of month 1, we detected a significant reduction of IIEF, depression scores with respect to basal values with out significant difference in free and total testosterone, for all administered items. Regarding ED , depression ,These values were similar to those found at the end of month 3 for almost all parameters. Free testosterone increased in all patients after 3 months of treatment with no significant change in total testosterone. In (G2) The baseline values of each IIEF, depression, free , total testosterone score were compared to those obtained at the end of 3 months of treatment there was no significant difference in all parameters. The organism adapts itself in some way to the action of cytokine. Psychological influence of IFN on the patients could justify the partial impairment of sensation linked to sexual behavior. CONCLUSION: Our study provided some more information in quantification and qualification of sexual disturbances related to IFN plus Ribavirin administration in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.
