The gastrointestinal eosinophilia is a broad term for abnormal eosinophilaccumulation in the gastrointestinal tract, involves many different diseases. These diseases include primary eosinophil associated gastrointestinaldiseases, gastrointestinal eosinophilia in hypereosinophilic syndrome, andall gastrointestinal eosinophilic states associated with known causes. Eachof these diseases has its unique features but there is no absolute boundarybetween them.Diagnosis of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases is based onmorphological evaluation with regard to localization and density ofeosinophil infiltration of the mucosa and/or deeper parts of the oesophagus, stomach and bowel in biopsy or resection specimens. Eosinophilmorphology includes intact cells with bilobated nuclei and eosinophilgranules in the cytoplasm and extracellular tissue followingactivation/degranulation. Associated histopathological features observed ineosinophilic gastrointestinal disease depend on the site of manifestation andprimary disease.
