Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, lifelong disease in which the body does not make enough insulin or cannot properly use the insulin, it produces. DM is classified into two types: type 1 DM which is characterized by an autoimmune process in which about 90% of B-cells are destroyed, usually leading to absolute insulin deficiency. Insulin is the only treatment for type 1 DM. In type 2 DM, the body makes insulin, but the cells cannot utilize it properly, resulting in insulin resistance. It is the most common type (90% of the total diabetic population). Oral hypoglycaemic medications are used for treatment and insulin may be added.
