Abstract

It has been proposed that altered serum VEGF levels may play a role in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The study group included 70 preeclamptic women and 20 normal pregnant women. Abdominal ultrasonography was done for all cases to estimate the fetal weight and evidence of IUGR. Maternal blood samples were assessed for human VEGF using ELISA technique. The results of the study revealed that serum VEGF concentrations were significantly lower in the group of preeclampsia than controls. Further efforts should concentrate on the balance between free VEGF, total VEGF, and flt-1.
