Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis has a predilection for involving the finger joints and the wrists. Hand function is usually affected and radiographs of the hand are widely used to diagnose RA and to assess its severity. This study aims to show relationship between disability of hand functions and joints damage in hands and wrists of RA patients. Fifty one patients and 10 healthy controls were examined using Health Assessment Questionnaire in evaluation of hand disability and X-ray of both hands and wrists were done to evaluate joint damage which then scored according to Sharp / Van der Heijde method. Our results showed that in patients with disease duration < 10 yrs. there was a significant correlation between disability of hand functions and the extent of joint damage in both hands and wrists, while patients with disease duration $ 10 yrs. there was no significant correlation between them.
