Abstract

This work was conducted on 30 patients with one or more level degreecervical disc disease as verified clinically, radiologically and operatively. They were refractive to adequate conservative therapy for more than 6months. 10 patients had been operated upon by anterior cervicaldiscectomy with bone graft fusion, 10 patients had been operated upon byanterior cervical discectomy with cervical interbody cage fusion whileanother 10 patients had been operated upon by anterior cervicaldiscectomy with cervical disc prosthesis replacement in a nonrandomizedcontrolled trail. All these patients were assessed clinically atdischarge then at 3, 6, 12 and 18 months post-operatively and finally weconclude that:• The commonest level affected is C5-6 level.• The most common complaint of patients is neck pain andbrachialgia.• MRI cervical spine is the investigation of choice for cervicalspondylosis.• Low incidence of associated adjacent- segments disease andMaintenance of normal motion at all segments of the spine with theplacement of cervical prosthesis (especially it has a rarecomplication rate) compared with decreased motion of theadjacent-segments after surgical fusion.• With a longer-term follow-up period, it is believed that cervicaldisc replacement will demonstrate the potential to play anincreasingly prominent role in the treatment of degenerativecervical disc disease.
