Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) versus arcuate keratotomy (AK) to treat astigmatism.Setting: Kaser Al-Ainy hospital, Cairo University. Methods: This retrospective nonrandomized study comprised 20 eyes of 14 patients devided into 2 groups. Group A contains 10 eyes of 7 patients for whom LASIK treatment had applied and group B contains 10 eyes of 7 patients for whom AK was applied. Results: Three months postoperatively, the cylinder’s vector-corrected change was as follows: Group A 2.024 D and group B 3.195 D. Respective mean uncorrected visual acuities in each group were as follows: Group A: 6/6 and Group B: 6/6.Conclusion: The vector-corrected change and the visual acuity achieved with LASIK were better, although not significantly, than those obtained with AK. Both methods proved to be safe.
