Phakic IOL's are now one of the most recent methods for the correction of high ametropia. There are two types, posterior chamber and anterior chamber. However before the implantation of these devices careful assessement and patient selection is necessary in order to avoid complications. Preoperative examination should include anterior chamber depth measurement, endothelial cell count, IOP measurement, detailed fundus examination and assessment of the crystalline lens condition. Among the most commonly encountered complications are...endothelial cell loss, glaucoma, pupil ovalisation, glare and halos and cataract. The safety of these lens depends on the appropriate choice of refractive correction for each patient individually. long-term follow up is needed to ascertain the safety, efficacy and stability of these lenses.
