Abstract
During the 1990s, jaundice was the most frequent reason for readmission after early hospital discharge. Kernicterus has been described in a small subset of these infants (Maisels and Newmen, 1998). We obtained transcutenous bilirubinometer readings using the Minolate Air Shields Jaundice Meter. This hospital base study was carried out on 40 neonates suspected on clinical grounds of having neonatal jaundice and admitted to the unit for any clinical condition. In all patients TCB readings were obtained from both forehead and sternum. At the same time a venous sample was collected for estimation of S.B level. The results were compared and it was fond that there is a significant linear relationship between trancuataneous bilirubinometery and serum bilirubin concentraion. The correlation coefficient between total serum bilirubin and the mean of transcutaneous bilirubinometry of the forehead and sternum at 24 hours of appearance of jaundice was 0.629 and P value significant<0.01.
