Abstract

Objectives: Analysis of the expression of estrogen receptors in uterine leiomyomas and normal myometrium.Material and methods: Thirty cases of randomly selected uterine leiomyomas and adjacent myometrium were assessed for their site, size, clinical presentation, histopathological type and estrogen receptor immunostaining. Results: Degree of estrogen receptors immunostaining was strong in classic submucous leiomyomata however it was weak in classic subserous leiomyomata. In classic leiomyomyomata stronger ER intensity was detected in the age group >40-50 years. Strong intensity of estrogen receptors immunostaining was more in leiomyomas than in the adjacent myometrium. All leiomyoma variants showed estrogen receptors, but could not be correlated with different histological types. Weak intensity of estrogen receptors immunostaining was more detected in degenerated leiomyomata. Conclusion and recommendations: Estrogen receptor immunostaining may be used as an indicator for responsiveness of these tumors with treatment by anti-estrogens.
