Abstract

The need for screening of patients for MRSA has become increasingly important in detecting carriers and preventing epidemics. This study was conducted in 6 month duration to monitor the incidence and prevalence rates of methicillin resistant S.aureus infection or colonization and analysis of risk factors for oxacillin and ofloxacin resistance among clinical isolates of MRSA. A complete history was taken about the patients from who these MRSA strains were isolated. Isolation of an oxacillin resistant strain was associated with longer duration of hospitalization before the culture date, intake of any antimicrobial therapy, older patient age, residence in the MICU or CCU, presence of any indwelling catheter on the day he referent culture was performed . Oxacillin Resistance Screening Agar is a simple and reliable method to determine oxacillin resistant S. aureus directly from clinical samples.
