Abstract

Objective: To study the sperm chromatin abnormalities in males with their wives having recurrent abortion by the use of Acridine Orange stain test (AO). The AO stain gives green fluorescence with normal double stranded DNA and red fluorescence with single denaturated DNA.Patients and Methods: 40 couples were concluded in this study, 20 couples of them were complaining of recurrent first trimester abortion. In addition there were 20 couples who had normal pregnancy and live offspring during the last 2 years.Results: The results showed that there was a significant increase in the percentage of sperm chromatin abnormalities in cases of repeated abortion compared to the other normal couples.Conclusion: The AO staining test could be used as one of the tests to examine the sperm chromatin integrity specially in unexplained cases of repeated abortion.
