Abstract

In this study carotid angiography was performed in 10 of 20 patients who were subjected to routine coronary angiography by a single operator in the department of Cardiology -Kasr El-Eini Hospital. To study the presence of morphological changes of carotid artery and to test the feasibility & tolerability of performing both carotid & coronary angiography in a small group of adults patients. The incidence of carotid artery stenosis in 20 patients was determined using duplex scan. No complications occurred from this procedure. Tortuousity of the carotid arteries was present in 7 patients. Variable degrees of carotid stenosis were present: (0-29%) in 62%, (30-49%) in 12%, (50-69%) in 10%, (70-99%) in 13% and occlusion (100%) in 3% of patients. This study concluded that carotid angiography in this group of patients proved to be simple & feasible. Further studies are needed to document the true prevalence of carotid disease among patients performing coronary angiography.
