Infant pulmonary function tests (IPFTs) measure a variety ofpulmonary variables in subjects who are generally too young to performconventional pulmonary diagnostic procedures. The aim of this study wasto assess the effect of neonatal pulmonary disorders and the effect oftherapeutic interventions on infant pulmonary functions in full term andpreterm neonates. This study included 29 neonate patients who hadsuffered from neonatal respiratory diseases and had been admitted to theneonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as well as 18, age and sex-matched,control subjects. Results revealed that the neonate patients have impairedlung function when compared to healthy controls of similar age and sex,and are at increased risk of subsequent recurrent episodes of wheezingthan healthy neonates.
