Abstract

Laryngeal cancer is the commonest malignant tumor in the head and neck. It represents 24 % of all head and neck cancers according to the latest Egyptian statistics done in 1991. The aim of this study is to throw more light on the epidemiological aspects of laryngeal cancer in our country. This work is a retrospective and prospective analysis of the epidemiological features of 100 Egyptian patients with cancer larynx who presented at the ENT Department of Cairo University and Haram Hospital during the period between January 1998 to March 2003. Data were collected and subjected to statistical analysis using Chi -square test. The tumor was found more in males (9:1) with a main age of 55 years. It was seen more among farmers in urban areas. Chronic heavy smoking was found in 97 % of patients. The incidence of glottic and supraglottic cancers was equal. Thirty four percent showed advanced stage at presentation. Continuous epidemiological analysis is essential in case of laryngeal cancer, which is a common and demanding problem in this country. Early detection and better prognosis are the direct and aimed resultant of such ongoing research.
