Abstract

Pediatric liver masses are an important problem; they are increasingly diagnosed, as a result of more frequent sophisticated imaging. Liver masses include benign neoplastic, malignant, and nonneoplastic masses. Many pediatric liver masses presented by abdominal distension, pain, and weight loss. But others present by congestive heart failure and obstructive jaundice or internal hemorrhage. Ultrasound and serum AFP are useful screening tests for pediatric liver masses, but spiral CT, MRI, angiography, and biopsy may be required. The aim of treating a liver mass is complete surgical removal, but many of the benign masses respond to medical treatment or simple procedures. Complete resection for a malignant liver mass is the first option, but preoperative chemotherapy is effective in shrinking many malignant masses to the point of resectability. Liver transplantation gives good results in unresectable liver masses.
