Abstract

Background: Worldwide, breastfeeding is recommended for every woman who gives birth to a child. The aim of this study was to explain infant feeding practices during the first six months of life and highlight factors that affect exclusive breastfeeding for complete 6 months.Methods: Cross-sectional study using questionnaires about infant feeding practices during the first six months of life. A convenient sample of 415 mothers attending general outpatient clinics of children Hospital - Cairo University were interviewed and the data was analysed.Results: only (12.8%) of babies were exclusively Breastfed for six months and Majority of babies (87.2%) received complementary feeds before age of six months due to different causes. The main sources of nutritional advice for mothers were Pediatricians (50.8%), grandmothers (31.1 %) and Obstetricians (18.1%).Conclusions: Initiation rates of BF are high but rates of exclusive BF are low and duration of BF is short. Social and medical support systems are required to improve duration and exclusivity of BF.
