Abstract
Type-1 Diabetes or IDDM is an autoimmune disorder causing destruction of the β-cells of the Islets of Langerhans ending in failure of insulin production and development of DM. The association between IDDM and other autoimmune disorders is common and especially autoimmune thyroiditis. The incidence of autoimmune thyroiditis was found not only to be prevalent among patients of IDDM but also their first degree relatives. In this study, 25 type 1 diabetic patients and their first degree relatives (mothers, fathers and siblings) were screened for thyroid autoantibodies vis anti-thyroglobulin and anti thyroid peroxidase antibodies along with thyroid function tests. Conclusion: Screening of type diabetics and their first degree relatives is recommended for thyroid autoimmunity using anti TG and anti TPO antibodies.
