Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrineand metabolic disorder associated with ovulatory dysfunction, hyperandrogenism and abdominal obesity. Altered activity of thesympathetic nervous system, which innervates adipose and ovarian tissue, may play a role in the development of PCOS. Electro-acupuncture (EA) isknown to reduce the sympathetic hyperactivity by stimulating ergoreceptorsand somatic afferent pathways in muscles. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of low-frequency EAfor 4 weeks on the body weight, pituitary gonadotrophins and ovarianhormones in estradiol valerate (EV) - induced rat PCOS model. Methods: Forty female albino rats were divided into control group, PCOSgroup, PCOS group received true EA and PCOS group received sham EAfor 4 weeks. After the end of the study, body weight was measured andserum levels of Luteinizing hormone (LH), Follicular stimulating hormone(FSH), estradoil (E2 ), progesterone and testosterone were analyzed. Results: our results showed significant (P<0.05) decrease in the bodyweight, serum LH, estradiol and testosterone levels, significant increase inserum FSH level meanwhile insignificant (P>0.05) change in serumprogesterone level in true EA group compared to PCOS group althoughthese parameters were not normalized relative to control group. Contrary, sham EA group showed insignificant change (P>0.05) in all parametersrelative to PCOS group. Conclusion: EA can be complementary but not an alternative in thetreatment of PCOS due to its incomplete significant improving effect.Key words: PCOS - electro-acupuncture - LH - FSH - testosterone.
