Metabolic encephalopathy, particularly of septic etiology, is the most common cause of altered mental status in the ICU setting. Our study aimed at correlating cerebral oximetry with systemic hemodynamic parameters. We included fifteen patients with metabolic encephalopathy. We found that cerebral oximetry does not show a statistically significant correlation with the standard hemodynamic parameters which are global indicators of peripheral tissue oxygen delivery / consumption balance (lactate, MAP, SvO2, GCS, PaO2/FiO2). No single, static, cerebral oximetry value can be taken as a prognostic indicator, but rather it is the trend of change over time that correlates with prognosis.
