The evolution of cataract surgical techniques over the pastdecades has been associated with a progressive decrease inthe size of the cataract incision. Wound size has progressivelydecreased from 10.0 mm in intracapsular cataract extractionto 7.0 mm in extracapsular cataract extraction then to 5.5 mmwith the advent of phacoemulsification. The widespread useof foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs) has allowed the cataractwound to decrease to 3.0 mm or less. Nowadays with theadvent in phacoemulsification machines, IOL technologies, and the introduction of other forms of energy, cataractsurgery and IOL implantation can be done through incision assmall as 1.5 mm. not only without inducing any astigmatismbut also correcting any preexisting astigmatism.
