Abstract

PCOS involves functional imbalance in hypothalmo-pituitary-ovarian axis as well adrenal glands. It results in ovulatory disorders, hirsutism, olighohypomenorrhea or amenorrhea and infertility. The etiology is multifactorial resulting in a pathogenesis featuring the abnormal insulin resistance, abnormal metabolic function of growth hormone and insulin like growth factors. PCOS results in abnormal levels of estrogens , androges, gonadotropins and prolactin. Diagnosis of depends on clinical features, investigations (Gonadotropins and sex steroid levels in urine and plasma). Also by ultra sound color Doppler three dimensional ultrasound, laparoscopy and MRI. Induction of ovulation is tried medically by clomiphene, gonadotropins, or surgically by bilateral ovarian wedge resection, laparoscopic ovarian drilling. Also by the use of assisted reproduction techniques.
