Abstract

Tuberculosis has few serological tests for diagnosis, the purpose ofthis study was to evaluate VEGF either serum or sputum as a helpingtool for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis. The study was conducted on 64 patients and 10 healthyindividuals as control group, the patients were divided into 21 patientswith active pulmonary tuberculosis, 23 patients with inactive pulmonarytuberculosis, 10 patients with bronchiectasis and 10 patients diagnosedto have bronchogenic carcinoma.Serum and sputum levels of VEGF were measured in all patientsand we found that serum and sputum levels in active T.B group wereelevated in comparison with inactive T.B or control groups and thedifference was statistically significant. We also found that sputum VEGF could be good indicator ofactivity than serum VEG and could be used as a tool of differentiationbetween T.B and other diseases as bronchiectasis and bronchogeniccarcinoma.
