Abstract

Prolactinoma is the most common pituitary tumor, accounting for 30% of all pituitary adenomas encountered in clinical practice. The clinical features of Prolactin secreting pituitary adenomas are related to the endocrinological consequences of sustained hyperprolactinemia and the neurological sequelae of an expansible sellar mass. 25 Prolactinoma cases were subjected to medical treatment using Dopamine agonists and were followed up for 1 year. 24% of cases were resistant to medical treatment or experienced intolerable side effects and were subjected to surgical treatment. The Remaining 76% of cases showed improvement of their symptoms and normalization of their serum Prolactin levels. 48% of cases showed reduction in tumor size after medical treatment. Conclusion: First line of therapy with Dopamine agonists is effective in normalizing hyperprolactinemia and shrinking tumour size. Surgical resection is indicated in patients who can't tolerate medical therapy or in whom it fails.
