Otitis media with effusion has been considered the most common cause of vestibular disturbances in children. Posturography allowed an assessment of the vestibular influence on postural stability with normal and diminished influences of vision and proprioception. Children with middle ear effusion had worse results on posturography than their age matched controls. This was due to disturbances in the vestibular system function and development.
