Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates especially preterm ones. This is a prospective study of 100 neonates admitted to Kasr El- Aini NICU in the period from February to June 2001. Diagnosis was made clinically and confirmed microbiologically by taking deep cultures as well as superficial cultures to detect bacterial and fungal causes of sepsis. An antibiogram was done to test the sensetivity of isolated organisms to the commonly used antibiotics. Plasmid profile analysis was done to the most common bacteria isolated. CMV infection was looked for using ELISA technique.
