The present study was carried out to obtain data about the spectrumand prevalence of skin diseases among primary school children in Ber Al-Abd district in North Sinai. The influence of living conditions andhygiene behavior on the magnitude of the prevalence was assessed. Atotal of 1058 primary school children aged 6 to 12 years were examined.Fifty three (53.9%) percent of the children had one or more skindisorders. The most frequent infectious skin disease was pediculosiscapitis (prevalence: 16%) followed by viral warts (3.5%),dermatophytoses 1% (tinea capitis: 0.6%, tinea circinata: 0.6%), scabies(1.1%), impetigo (1%), herpes simplex (0.6%) and chickenpox (0.4%).The most frequent non-infectious skin disease was pityriasis alba(prevalence: 18.9%) followed by melanocytic nevi (9.5%), postinflammatoryhyperpigmentation & post-traumatic scars (3.5%), atopicdermatitis (1.7%), papular urticaria (insect bite reaction) (1.7%), café aulait spots (1.5%), freckles (1.5%). Other diagnoses included alopeciaareata (0.8%), burn & burn scar (0.8%), intertrigo (0.3%), postinflammatoryhypopigmentation (0.3%), vitiligo (0.2%), keloid (0.2%),hyperhydrosis (0.2%), urticaria (0.1%), ichthyosis vulgaris (0.1%), nevusdepigmentosus (0.1%), nevus spilus (0.1%), haemangioma (0.1%),contact dermatitis (0.1%), periorbital dermatitis (0.1%), poliosis (0.1%)and angular cheilitis (0.1%).
