Abstract

Anemia is the commonest medical disorder to complicate pregnancy. Iron deficiency is believed to be the most common cause of anemia in pregnancy. According to present data, it can be concluded that a mean of hemoglobin level of pregnant females attending El-Kasr Al-Aini obstetric emergency ward at time of delivery was 9.3 gm/dl , females with severe anemia were (13.0%), moderate anemia were (34.0%) and mild anemia were (53.0%). There was a nonsignificant relationship between both the mode of delivery and the age of pregnant females with maternal anemia. The results showed a positive association between maternal anemia, low birth-weight newborns and the mean of the birth-weight of the delivered newborns. Severe anemia (30.0%) was found to increase the risk of low-birth weight than moderate and mild anemia (19.0% and16.0% respectively).
