Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of diabetes is increasing world wide. Diabetic foot problems are devastating end-stage complications of diabetes. Foot problems can lead to amputations and both are a major cause of morbidity, disability, as well as emotional and physical costs for people with diabetes.Objectives : the purpose of the present study is to assess foot self care practice among diabetics and awareness of foot complications and provide an educational role for preventing of foot lesions. Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 100 diabetic patients attending the diabetic outpatient clinic in Shony El-takamoly hospital. Patients were enquired about their foot care practices. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Foot examination of included patients was also performed and foot care practices were compared with examination findings. Educational sessions were given to the patients during the follow up visits regarding foot self assessment and care.Result: This study revealed that there was statistically significant correlations between about all foot care practice and foot care education except in smoking (p value :0.057) .Also it revealed statistically significant correlations between fungal foot infections and foot drying practices and corns and callosities and ingrowing toe nails were associated with inappropriate foot wear. Conclusion: Majority of the patients had poor awareness and poor foot self-care practices .Recommendation: Appropriate foot care education should be given to diabetic patients by health care professional to enable them carry out adequate foot self-care practices.
