Abstract

Leptin is the product of ob gene, is produced by mature adipocyte and secreted in plasma. It inhibits food intake, reduces body weight. the aim of work was to determine leptin levels in patients type II diabetes mellitus and whether these levels are affected by the stages of diabetic nephropathy or not. The study was conducted on 40 patients suffering from type II NIDDM, were divided into 3 groups (normo, micro, macroalbuminuria). Conclusion: It was found that serum leptin levels were significantly elevated in type II diabetic patients with micro and macroalbuminuria suggesting that renal leptin degradation is impaired in the early stages of renal disease and this impairment increases with the progress of the disease.
