Abstract

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem that has both a medical and an economic impact. It is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration ofbone tissue. It is most common in women after menopause, when it is calledpostmenopausal osteoporosis, but may also develop in men, and may occur inanyone in the presence of particular hormonal disorders and other chronic diseasesor as a result of medications, specifically glucocorticoid, when the disease is calledsteroid- or glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (SIOP or GIOP). Osteoporosis can be prevented with lifestyle improvement and sometimesmedications and in people with osteoporosis treatment may involve lifestyleimprovement, preventing falls and medication.
