Abstract
Apoptosis and apoptotic related proteins Bcl-2 have been observed in human breast carcinomas. This study investigated the significance of Bcl-2 expression and apoptotic index (AI) in Egyptian patients with primary breast cancer. The study evaluated Bcl-2 immune reactivity and AI in primary breast cancers with the Apoptag method in 25 breast cancer patients retrospectively with long term follow up (mean 32 months). High Bcl-2 expression was seen in 10 (45.4%) cases, and low Bcl-2 expression was seen in 12 (54.6%). Increased Bcl-2 associated with better disease free survival and overall survival and associated with older age group of patients, high AI was found in 16% unfortunately there was no correlation between AI and other prognostic factors.
